AMOH Fitness Challenge Thread

Postby spottygiraffe » Tue Oct 30, 2012 5:14 pm

The aim is to do some kind of exercise every day for a month, starting from Thursday 1st November. If it goes well and we are enjoying it, then we can extend the time period. The suggested distance is 5 kilometres, but it doesn't matter if you can't do this every day; just do what you can and every effort will count towards your total points for the month.

We can add up and record our points on this thread so we can motivate each other, and please do add maps or photos too.

As we're a horsey forum then horse riding is going to count -you could even record or estimate the distance travelled when schooling.... We can discuss adding points for other bursts of activity such as poo picking and carrying hay bales. the idea is just to try to be more active so I think any effort should be rewarded. I am roughly basing the points on calories burned and I have a huge list that even includes ironing!

You can work out your points as follows: (Kilometres travelled) x (the relevant factor for your activity as detailed below).

Walking x 1
Cycling x 1.5
Horse riding (general) x 0.5
Horse riding (strenuous, ie. Endurance) x 1
Running x 2
Swimming x 2
Gym equipment x 1.5

And for the following activities you get points for the duration:

Poo picking/mucking out - 10 minutes = 1 point
Carrying feed bags/hay -10 minutes = 1 point
Sweeping the yard - 10 minutes = 0.5 points
Grooming -10 minutes = 0.5 points
Trimming feet- 10 minutes = 1.5 points
Lunging/in-hand/groundwork - 10 minutes = 1 point

For example today I ran 5k, so I would times that distance by the number for running above. 5 x 2 = 10 points.
If I had ridden 10k as well then I would also get 10 x 0.5 = 5 points.
If I had groomed Isba for 20 minutes I would get another point so that would be a total of 16 points.

So how does that sound? No problem to make changes. We can see who can amass the most points during the month (Candy?!) but it is just meant to be a bit of fun rather than overly competitive.

Who's in? Any more activites you'd like me to add points for? Ready to start on Thursday.....?

Sounds a good plan Sarah, I'm in! Not sure about starting Thursday though but can catch up next week. It would be good to have the incentive during the winter months.

I'll join in. Much of it will be done on horseback as when I am short of time that is my first choice.
I will also do some biking, walking, not much running, swimming in the summer. Can't promise to do every day but will give it a good go

Yay, Sheila and Katy!

Don't worry about not starting tomorrow Sheila, that just means that it will be easy to beat your score next month if you don't miss any days

 I'm in and as I start DIY with the boys then I'd be pleased if poo picking and mucking out were even in a tiny way going to help
Which watch do you have Sarah? Think I may have to otherwise I'll never have a clue how far I've gone

Great that so many of us are going to be doing it :hurray:

My watch is a Garmin Forerunner, Trudi. Pink! I don't think they do a purple one ;) It doesn't plot maps like some flashier versions and I think it was about €150, but it was my Birthday pressie so am not sure.

Great effort Helen, but the photos did make me feel very chilly!

I will add points for poo picking and other horsey activities but right now OH wants my attention so I had better be nice to him if I want him to give me more sympathy for my sore (kicked) leg. Speaking of which I might struggle to get started on Day One tomorrow but I will see how it feels.

Points system will be added into the first post on this thread for quick reference. If anyone is confused by my system then just keep a record of what you've done and I will work out your points

Day One and 'nil points' for me  Out of action with sore leg.

Did anyone else get off the starting blocks?

I've added points for horsey activities in the first post on this thread. Would it be good for those of you without GPS to have a points system based on duration rather than distance for walking etc aswell?

I have done a 5km bike ride and hope to horse ride in a bit so if I remember I will gps it to see how far we cover with that too.
Today is easier for me being on holiday and not having a sore leg
